Follow these simple measuring steps to find your accurate hat size. A soft tape measure and our instructions will help you achieve a comfortable, secure fit.

How to Measure Your Head for a Hat

Use this guide to measure your head and choose the right hat size. A soft cloth measuring tape and a few simple steps will help you find a comfortable, secure fit.

Step 1: Place the tape around the fullest part at the back of the head.

Step 2: Bring the tape around to the front, across the middle of the forehead.

Step 3: For a higher “halo” fit, measure closer to the hairline.

General Measuring Tips

  • Use a soft cloth measuring tape.
  • Measure in centimetres (cm) for the most accurate result.
  • Ask someone to help you for a more accurate measurement.
  • Measure where you want the hat to sit on your head.

Option 1: Traditional Fit

This is the classic way to wear a hat – sitting just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead.

  1. Place the measuring tape around the back of your head, over the fullest part.
  2. Bring the tape around to the front of your head, about 5 mm above your ears.
  3. Position it in the centre of your forehead, or just above the eyebrows.
  4. Make sure the tape is snug but not tight – this is how the hat will feel.
  5. If you are between sizes, choose the larger size and adjust with a hat filler if needed.

Option 2: Halo Fit

This style sits slightly higher on the forehead and creates a “halo” effect around the head.

  1. Place the tape around the back of your head, over the fullest part.
  2. Bring the tape around to the front, about 5 mm above your ears.
  3. Position it at the top of your forehead, near the beginning of your hairline.
  4. Check that the tape feels comfortable in this higher position.
  5. Use this measurement with the size guide to choose your ideal size.

How to Measure a Child’s Head

Follow these steps if you are checking whether the hat sizes are suitable for your child.

  1. Place the measuring tape around the back of the head, over the fullest part.
  2. Bring the tape around to the front, about 5 mm above the ears.
  3. Position it in the centre of the forehead, or just above the eyebrows.
  4. Make sure the tape is sitting comfortably – not too loose and not too tight.
  5. Read the measurement in cm and compare it with the kids size guide.

Fit Tips

  • Fit is a personal preference – some people prefer a firm fit, others a relaxed feel.
  • A firmer fit is better for active days or windy weather.
  • For longer wear (more than 4 hours), a slightly looser fit is usually more comfortable.
  • If you are between sizes, choosing the larger size and using a sizing insert can offer comfort and flexibility.
